Major Winter Storm to Hit Southern Ontario with Up to 40 cm of Snow

As Southern Ontario recovers from the season’s largest snowfall over the weekend, another powerful winter storm is set to impact the region midweek. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning that parts of Southern Ontario, including Ottawa, could receive up to 40 cm of snow from Wednesday through Thursday. Meanwhile, freezing rain is a possibility for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Hamilton.

Significant Snowfall Expected

The storm is expected to begin Wednesday evening and intensify overnight into Thursday. Environment Canada has indicated that if the low-pressure system moves further south, precipitation will remain predominantly snow, which could lead to even greater accumulations.

Authorities are advising residents to prepare for hazardous travel conditions due to poor visibility and accumulating snow. Those planning non-essential travel should consider postponing trips until conditions improve.

Impact on Toronto

Toronto experienced over 15 cm of snow this past weekend, marking the city’s most significant snowfall of the season. The storm led to the temporary closure of over 50 TTC bus stops and caused delays and cancellations at Pearson International Airport.

In response, the city has deployed multiple rounds of salting and plowing services to clear roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Additionally, warming centers have been opened to assist those in need during the cold snap.

Weather Forecast for the Week

  • Tuesday: Cloudy with a high of -3°C and wind chill of -12°C in the morning. The temperature will drop to -7°C at night.
  • Wednesday: Overcast, with temperatures holding steady at -3°C throughout the day and night.
  • Thursday: A high of 1°C followed by a nighttime low of -7°C.

Pearson Airport Prepares for the Storm

Toronto Pearson International Airport is closely monitoring what could be its most significant snowfall of the season, set to begin Wednesday afternoon. Airport officials have assured travelers that airfield and deicing crews are ready, with 161 pieces of state-of-the-art equipment available to maintain runway safety and keep flights operational.

GTA and Surrounding Areas

  • Mississauga: A mix of cloudy skies and sunshine throughout the week, with periods of snow on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • Oshawa: Flurries are expected early in the week, followed by heavier snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday. The weekend will bring a mix of sun and clouds with a chance of additional snow.

Precautionary Measures

Residents across Southern Ontario are urged to take precautions ahead of the storm. Commuters should allow extra travel time, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and monitor updates from local weather agencies. Emergency preparedness measures, including having essential supplies at home, are also recommended.

With another blast of winter on the way, Ontarians should brace for challenging weather conditions in the days ahead.
