Death toll soars on both sides as Pakistan says 26 killed in Indian strikes and 10 dead in Pakistani shelling along Kashmir border
Explosions rang out across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir overnight as India said it was targeting nine alleged militant hideouts in retaliation against the mass shooting of tourists in April last month in Pahalgam.
Khawaja Muhammad Asif, the Pakistani defence minister, told Bloomberg that at least five Indian planes have been downed. India said three of its aircraft had come down over Indian-administered Kashmir.
The defence minister initially claimed Indian soldiers had also been captured but later retracted the comment.“We do not want this situation to escalate,” the minister said.
A Pakistan military spokesperson said at least 26 civilians were killed in India’s airstrikes, and a mosque was destroyed.
Heavy shelling has taken place throughout the night and morning across the de facto border in Kashmir. The Indian army said 10 Indian civilians had been killed by “indiscriminate” firing.
India has blamed Pakistan for the 22 April Kashmir attack in which 26 men, mostly tourists, were killed, and vowed to respond. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the killings.
